What Changed: As of early August 2026, OpenAI moved Free (and Go) users onto GPT-5.6 Luna, a lighter model in the GPT-5.6 family, replacing the older GPT-5.5 Instant. The bigger news for Free users specifically: text chats are now unlimited — previously you'd hit a daily message cap.

• People who mainly use text chat and don't need fast or frequent image generation
• Anyone testing whether ChatGPT fits into their workflow before upgrading

Usage is unlimited subject to standard abuse guardrails.

Who Should Use It?

If you're in college and trying to figure out which plan is actually worth buying, here's a direct answer based on what students typically use ChatGPT for: research summaries, assignment help, exam prep, coding practice, and the occasional presentation or project image.

For most college students, ChatGPT Go is the best plan right now — and with the current promo, it's free until November 7, 2026, which makes the decision easy. Here's why it fits better than the alternatives:

• Free is fine for occasional, light use — a quick doubt cleared before an exam, a one-off summary. Text chats are now unlimited on Free, but slow image generation (5–10 minutes) and limited uploads still become frustrating once you're using it regularly through a semester.
• Go removes the image-generation pain point — faster creation that takes seconds instead of minutes, which matters if you're making presentation visuals or project diagrams — plus more messages and uploads, and longer memory across conversations. It doesn't unlock GPT-5.6's advanced reasoning, but for coursework, summarizing, and everyday writing help, GPT-5.6 Luna is more than capable.
• Plus (₹1,999/month) makes sense only for specific cases: engineering or CS students doing serious coding work who'll actually use expanded Codex access, or postgrad/research students who need expanded deep research for literature reviews and thesis work. For most undergrad coursework, it's more capability than you'll use.

Storage Limits

Beyond messages, image generation, and model access, each ChatGPT plan comes with a different Library storage cap — for your uploaded files and AI-generated images combined. This is a newer addition to ChatGPT and isn't listed on the main pricing page, so most comparison articles miss it entirely.

You can check your own usage anytime under Settings → Storage. Files stay in your library until you manually delete them — Temporary Chat uploads don't count against this limit since they're not saved. Per-file limits also apply regardless of plan: 512 MB max per file, 20 MB max per image.

For reference, my own Go account is currently at 914 MB of the 4 GB limit after months of regular use — mostly from image generation, which tends to eat storage faster than file uploads if you're a frequent user.
