Buying Electronics Online This Festive Season: Amazon and Flipkart Return Policy & Doorstep Checks

Amazon and Flipkart Return Policy & Delivery Checks Guide

Buying a phone, TV, AC, or home theatre during an Amazon Great Indian Festival or Flipkart Big Billion Days sale can come with a major catch: getting a defective or damaged product replaced isn’t always as simple as clicking “Return.”

Most consumer electronics are now strictly replacement-only, return windows have shrunk to 7 to 10 days, and for most major brands, a defect routes you straight to the brand’s authorized service center rather than back to the e-commerce platform. Furthermore, the rollout of Open Box Delivery (OBD) has shifted the burden of physical inspection entirely onto your shoulders at the doorstep.

This Amazon and Flipkart return policy guide breaks down what to check before you place an order, what to inspect at the door, how to navigate brand installations, and how to protect yourself if you receive a defective unit. It is based on official platform policies and documented firsthand purchases: an air conditioner from Flipkart and a Sony 5.1 home theatre from Amazon.

Policy Verification Date: 29 September 2026. E-commerce platforms regularly revise policy tiers, eligible pin codes, brand rosters, and inspection fees. The policy badge on your specific product page always overrides general terms.

Before you order

1. The product page decides

Both Amazon and Flipkart say the return or replacement policy shown on the product page overrides their general policy. Check it before you pay, not after the box arrives.

2. Read the return badge and its popup

On Amazon, the return type appears in the icon row under the price, for example “10 days Service Centre Replacement”. Tap it to see who handles what. On my Sony home theatre listing, the popup said:

  • Physical damage, wrong or missing item: replacement within 10 days of delivery, verified by Amazon through image or video.
  • Defective item: handled under Sony’s warranty policy at a service centre. Sony may repair the product or provide a replacement or a defective certificate, and the time taken follows Sony’s warranty policies.
  • Open Box Delivery orders: returns for damage, wrong or missing items are not accepted.

I saw the same structure on a Samsung phone listing. So read the popup on your own product rather than assuming the general rule.

3. Know which return type you are buying

Amazon uses several types for electronics: 7/10 days service-centre replacement, replacement by brand, plain replacement, and 10/30 days returnable. On Flipkart, most phones and electronics get 7 days, replacement only. For phones and electronics from many big brands (including Apple, Samsung, Sony, LG, OnePlus and others on Flipkart’s list), Flipkart sends defect cases to the brand’s service centre, and it says the final decision rests with the seller or brand.

4. Don’t count on a refund for a change of mind

For most electronics the remedy for a genuine problem is a replacement or a service-centre resolution, not a refund. Flipkart provides one replacement only. Amazon’s page also says eligibility can depend on your account history, covering roughly the past six to twelve months, and that it may charge a return processing fee or restrict accounts for excessive returns.

5. Check installation

For big appliances, find out who installs the product and whether it is free. Amazon lists “Brand Installation available” on some listings. On Flipkart, for products installed by its service partners, the policy says not to open the packaging yourself.

At the door

6. Look at the outer carton

Check for dents, torn tape, water marks and crushed corners, and photograph the sealed box with its label. Flipkart’s policy says you can reject an order at the doorstep, so a visibly damaged carton is the moment to consider refusing it.

7. For phones and laptops, check the product at delivery where open-box delivery is offered

Both platforms offer open-box delivery or an inspection service on some orders, which lets you check the product in front of the delivery person before you accept it. For phones and laptops, open-box delivery gives you a chance to check the product before accepting it, where the service is available. On the Amazon listing I checked for a Dell laptop, it came with a ₹129 service fee, so look at the delivery details on your own listing. On Amazon, the delivery associate first verifies the phone number used for the order (you share its last 4 digits), and then opens the item for your inspection.

Flipkart Open Box Delivery terms work in a similar way, with a few differences worth knowing. It is only available for select products and locations, and if your product qualifies, it is mentioned on the order details page. You get an OTP by SMS when the order is out for delivery, and you share the last 4 digits of the phone number used for the order to start the process. For pay-on-delivery orders, the terms say payment must be made before the agent starts the process, and card-on-delivery, contactless and digital payments such as UPI are not supported. The terms I read don’t mention a service fee, but check your own order page.

The catch is the OTP. Amazon’s popup says you will not be able to return or replace the item for a wrong item, physical damage or missing parts once the OTP is submitted, and the delivery associate photographs the opened items for internal records. Flipkart says that once you accept an open-box delivery, no return request is processed except for manufacturing defects. That means the OTP closes your claim for a wrong, damaged or incomplete item, while a functional defect that shows up later still goes through the brand’s warranty or service-centre route, as on the Sony listing I bought from. So do all your checks before you share the OTP or accept the delivery:

The 5-Point Doorstep Inspection Checklist

Before uttering the OTP:

  • Body: look for dents, scratches, cracks, and signs that the box or seal was already opened.
  • Box and IMEI: the IMEI or serial number on the box, the invoice and the device should match.
  • Power on: ask the delivery associate to let you switch it on and check that it starts properly. Amazon’s popup only lists checking that the item is correct, damage-free and complete, so this may depend on the associate.
  • Screen: check for dead pixels, lines, colour patches, and touch response across the whole screen. On a laptop, also test the keyboard, trackpad, ports and hinge.
  • Accessories: charger, cable, manual and any freebies should all be in the box.

A quick check at the door cannot catch everything, such as battery life, camera quality or speaker problems, so keep testing during the return window. If you find damage, a wrong product or missing parts during the applicable inspection, raise it before accepting the delivery. On Flipkart, if the package is not intact, damaged or the wrong product, you hand it back to the delivery agent and a refund is initiated immediately: cash is returned at once for COD orders, and prepaid refunds are credited within 2 business days. The terms also say you would need to place a new order, so a sale price may not be available again.

8. When Delivery Staff Refuses to Open Large Boxes

For major appliances—televisions, refrigerators, washing machines, split air conditioners, and multi-component home audio—delivery personnel will usually drop off the sealed carton and refuse to open it.

This is normal and intended. E-commerce platforms mandate that large appliances be unpacked only by certified brand technicians to prevent disputes over who caused physical damage.

Big-ticket items: what happened to me

My air conditioner (bought on Flipkart)

The box stayed sealed at delivery. The next day the brand’s installer came on his own, opened it, and found the copper pipes missing, so the AC could not be installed. He photographed the problem and called the brand’s service centre, who told me to contact Flipkart. Flipkart asked for the photos and gave me a decision within 5 to 6 hours: Rs 2,500 if I needed installation urgently, or a replacement in 5 to 6 days. I chose the replacement. The new unit arrived on day 5, and the old one was taken away.

My Sony home theatre (bought on Amazon)

About 15 minutes after delivery, Sony called to say an installer would come the same day. He did, and installed it without me doing anything.

Two lessons from these. First, the brand usually arranges installation itself, so keep your phone reachable after delivery. Second, your outcome depends on the seller, the brand and your city, so my 5-day replacement is my experience and not a guarantee.

If the installer finds a problem

  1. Don’t let installation go ahead if parts are missing or damaged.
  2. Collect evidence: the installer’s photos, the box label, and a job sheet or service request number if there is one. Film the unboxing if you can.
  3. Contact the platform the same day. The brand’s service centre may send you to Amazon or Flipkart, as mine did.
  4. Ask what the options are. A missing part may be handled by sending the part, giving store credit for it (Flipkart says accessories can be settled this way at the seller’s discretion), replacing the unit, or compensation. If the missing part blocks installation, as it did for me, a replacement takes days, so compare that with any compensation offered.

Golden Rules for Installation-Dependent Goods

  • Never break the seal yourself: If the product listing or delivery slip notes “Technician Installation Required,” breaking the factory tape yourself can void your transit-damage coverage.
  • Halt installation immediately if issues arise: If a dent, internal rattling, or missing hardware is discovered, stop the technician from mounting the appliance.
  • Secure the Job Sheet: Always request a physical or digital copy of the technician’s inspection report stating “Damaged in Box” or “Incomplete Shipment.”

The Technician Visit Bottleneck

When a product displays a functional defect within the 7 to 10-day window (e.g., a TV panel showing backlight bleed, a washing machine motor failure, or a toaster failing to heat), platforms initiate a “Technician Inspection”:

  • Amazon or Flipkart dispatches a third-party engineer to certify the manufacturing fault.
  • The Clock Traps: If the service ticket is raised on Day 6 of a 7-day window, customers often panic thinking the window will expire before the technician arrives. Your claim eligibility locks on the timestamp the ticket is created.
  • The Defective Certificate: The technician must mark the product as defective in their internal portal or issue a physical Denial of Service / Defective Certificate. Once uploaded to the platform chat, the replacement or refund process unlocks. Ensure you follow up daily so the ticket is not automatically cancelled due to technician scheduling delays.

Home appliances: small and large

Home appliances follow the same platform rules, but the return type depends on the product and the platform.

Amazon: small appliances can show either type. Two listings I checked:

philips mixer grinder return rules
  • Philips mixer grinder: “10 days Service Centre Replacement”. A defect goes through Philips’ warranty policy at a service centre, where Philips may repair the product or provide a replacement or a defective certificate. Physical damage, a wrong item or a missing item gets a replacement from Amazon within 10 days of delivery, and returns are not accepted if it was an Open Box Delivery order.
  • Russell Hobbs toaster: “10 days Replacement”. Physical damage, a defect, a wrong item or a missing item all get a replacement within 10 days of delivery, but you need to submit a proof of issue. Amazon may prompt you to download a diagnostic app or upload an image, and may schedule a call or a technician visit.

So two small appliances on the same platform can have different rules for defects. Read the popup on your own listing.

Flipkart: three tiers for appliances.

  • Most small home appliances (except chimneys, water purifiers, fans and geysers): 7 days, replacement only. Flipkart may troubleshoot online, by phone or with a technician visit, and if no defect is confirmed in the window you are directed to the brand’s service centre.
  • Large appliances from the listed brands (for example LG, Haier, Godrej, IFB, Voltas, Bosch, Havells, Whirlpool, Blue Star and Daikin): 7 days service-centre replacement or repair only, subject to the brand’s warranty and service policies.
  • Other large appliances, plus chimneys, water purifiers, fans and geysers: 10 days, replacement only, counted from delivery or installation where applicable. For products that need installation, a return is eligible only if the brand’s authorised personnel installed it.

Flipkart provides only one replacement in any case.

A few practical points for appliances:

  • Test small appliances on day one. Run a mixer with the jars fitted, and heat a toaster once, and record a short video if something is wrong. Amazon’s toaster listing asks for proof of the issue, and a video or clear photos make that easier.
  • Keep the jars, lids, trays and accessories. Both platforms expect the original condition with all accessories, the MRP tag and the box.
  • For large appliances that need installation, follow the installation advice above: leave the box sealed for the brand’s installer, and get the installer’s photos if anything is missing or damaged.

After delivery

9. Test early

Windows are short. Amazon’s example above was 10 days from delivery, and Flipkart’s is 7 days for phones and most electronics, and 10 days from delivery or installation (where applicable) for large appliances and furniture. For a defect on a phone or TV, get it checked in the first days, not the last.

10. Keep everything

Both platforms expect the original condition: brand box, MRP tag, manual, warranty card and all accessories. Flipkart’s pickup executive checks that the IMEI or serial number matches, all accessories and freebies are present, and the product and box are undamaged, and the return can be refused if not.

11. Wipe devices before returning them

Flipkart asks you to format phones, laptops and tablets and disable the screen lock before a return, and to disable iCloud lock on Apple devices. Amazon says it is not liable for personal data left on returned devices.

If it isn’t resolved

Escalate through the order’s help chat with photos and video. If that fails, use the platform’s grievance redressal page. After that, you can call the National Consumer Helpline on 1915 or file a complaint on the government’s e-Jagriti portal (e-jagriti.gov.in), which replaced the earlier e-Daakhil portal for online consumer complaints. Keep your invoice, order ID, photos or videos and all messages ready.

Quick checklist

  • Read the return badge and popup on the product page before buying.
  • Check who installs the product and whether it is free.
  • Photograph the sealed carton and label at delivery, and consider refusing visibly damaged boxes.
  • For phones and laptops, where open-box delivery is offered, check the body, IMEI, power-on, screen and accessories before sharing the OTP.
  • Keep your phone reachable for the brand’s installer call.
  • Film the unboxing and get the installer’s photos if anything is missing or damaged.
  • Contact the platform the same day with the evidence.
  • Keep the box, MRP tag, manual, warranty card and accessories until you are sure.
  • Wipe and unlock-disable devices before any return.
