Last checked: October 1, 2026 –How I put this together: I went through Google’s announcements and release notes, plus reporting from TechCrunch, 9to5Google, Android Authority and others. I also checked my own Gemini account to see which changes had reached it. Features found only in app teardowns are unofficial and may change.
Google has shipped a lot of Gemini news lately: a new flagship model, a change that ends Gems, new voice models, and a smarter Gemini for Home. Some of it you can use today, and some you can’t. I’ll go in order of how much it matters to everyday users.

Gemini 4 Argon Launched: Strong Claims, Limited Access
Alphabet announced Gemini 4 Argon on September 30. Google describes it as a model for coding, research and writing, with a particular strength in cybersecurity. TechCrunch
It isn’t publicly available yet. Argon is being rolled out only to a select group of Google’s cyber partners through the Fairwind Program, Google’s security initiative. Google hasn’t announced when access will widen, and nothing has been said about India specifically. I haven’t tested Argon myself. TechCrunch
The security angle
Google says Argon was trained for defensive cyber work and can find, validate and patch critical software vulnerabilities autonomously. That’s a big claim. It also fits the careful rollout, since a model that’s good at fixing security holes is a sensitive tool. Google is taking a phased approach, starting with trusted partners. TechCrunch
Beyond security
Google says its own staff already use Argon daily for debugging and codebase migrations, and that it can analyze long videos and charts. One report adds that Argon’s agents are helping Google migrate C/C++ code to Rust. TechCrunchanalyticsindiamag
The benchmarks are mixed
Google says Gemini 4 Argon outperformed competing models on several benchmarks, but the results vary by test, and some coding tests favored rivals.
Here’s the pattern in the figures published around launch. On DeepSWE, a long-horizon software engineering test, Argon scored 77.9%, ahead of Claude Opus 5.5 at 74.2% and GPT-6 Astra at 74.1%. But on FrontierSWE v2 it scored 55.0% against Astra’s 65.5%, and on Terminal-Bench 4.0 Claude Opus 5.5 led by about nine points. Argon also leads the Vals Index at 68.9%. There’s a real-world caveat too. Bloomberg reported that people with direct access say Argon scores well on popular benchmarks but looks less steady on actual tasks, including some coding jobs. finimize
My takeaway: it looks strongest in knowledge work, long video and finance-style tasks, and less clearly ahead for coding. Independent testing will tell us more once access widens.
How We Got Here
Google’s last major flagship releases were Gemini 3 Pro in November 2025 and Gemini 3.1 Pro in February 2026. A Gemini 3.5 Pro was teased over the summer but never released, and Google said it took a step back to focus on Flash models. 9to5google
DeepMind chief Koray Kavukcuoglu told The Information’s AI Agenda Live Summit that Gemini 4 had entered post-training, with internal testing underway. Argon followed days later. It arrives as OpenAI and Anthropic keep releasing competing frontier models. 9to5google
Gems Are Becoming Skills
If you use Gemini regularly, this is the update to watch.

When I opened the Gems page in Gemini on the web, I saw a notice about the change. Here is what’s confirmed:
- Personal accounts: Google will begin automatically converting Gems into skills on November 17, 2026, according to an in-app notice. Existing Gems keep working until they are migrated. techrepublicnotebookcheck
- Work and school accounts: Google lists March 2027 for Workspace business, enterprise and nonprofit accounts, and June 2027 for education accounts. unite
- Gems made by Labs: These will go away without migrating into skills, and Opal is also scheduled to shut down in November 2026. If you use any of the Labs Gems, plan for that. unite
A few caveats worth knowing:
- Skills require Keep Activity to be turned on, and are only for people over 18 with a personal Google account. If you disabled Keep Activity for privacy reasons, check before November 17. notebookcheck
- Reports say creating new skills currently requires a Google AI Pro or AI Ultra subscription, while Gems were open to everyone. siliconreport
- Google advises downloading knowledge files from Gems with attached files before the migration. notebookcheck
My suggestion is to copy the instructions from your most important Gems into a document now, and retest them after they convert.

The Gemini App Redesign
A redesign of the Gemini app on Android and iOS has begun rolling out. Search moves to the top-right corner, chat history gains filters for All, Ready, Needs attention and In progress, and a new “Scheduled” item replaces the “Scheduled actions” page. 9to5google
The new Customize section has a Discover tab showing skills and third-party connected apps, and a Connectors tab that replaces the old Connected Apps page. 9to5Google reported that skills are activated with the “@” symbol in this redesign, rather than the slash used in Gemini Spark. Slash commands have also been described for skills elsewhere, so expect both to appear as the rollout continues. A Settings redesign is appearing too, though only on one of the reporter’s accounts so far. Gemini app starts rolling out big side panel simplification, settings redesign +2
What I saw
On October 1, the redesign had not reached my account. The web version still showed the older Gems layout, with the migration notice at the top. I haven’t checked the mobile apps, where the rollout was reported. That’s normal for a staged rollout, and I’ll update this section when it arrives.
New Models: 3.8 Flash and 3.8 Live
Google’s model listings show Gemini 3.8 Flash arriving on September 2, followed by Gemini 3.8 Live and Gemini 3.8 Live Extended Thinking on September 15. The Live models power Gemini’s spoken, real-time conversations.
In August, Google released Gemini 3.7 Flash for coding and agents, Gemini 3.5 Transcribe for speech-to-text, and Gemini Omni 1.1 Flash for video generation, alongside the Pixel 11 series. Google now ships Gemini updates at a near-weekly pace, mostly in the Flash and specialty lines. blog
Gemini for Home Listens Better
The latest Google Home update makes Gemini for Home better at hearing commands in noisy rooms and at responding faster. It also improves Find My Phone reliability, multilingual recognition, smart light controls, camera tiles and device setup, with a long list of fixes for Matter switches, camera playback and Automations. androidauthorityandroidauthority
For Developers: Gemini CLI
A recent Gemini CLI release ships security fixes for MCP OAuth discovery and stricter workspace trust handling in restricted mode. If you use the CLI with MCP servers, updating is worth a few minutes for the security fixes alone. releasebot
What’s Coming Next (Unconfirmed)
This part comes from code teardowns, not announcements. Android Authority found a new selector in version 17.62.9 of the Google app. It lets you switch between a standard Chat and a Spark-related Task, with a bell icon for recent chats and an icon for Proactive Assistance on either side. If it ships, it would turn the overlay into a place to hand off work. Google can change or drop features like this before release. androidauthority
Who Gets What
- Everyday users: Argon isn’t for you yet. What you’ll notice is the new app layout, the Gems-to-skills switch, and better voice handling.
- Developers and businesses: The Flash models remain the practical choice, and the CLI keeps improving. Watch for news on broader Argon access.
- Security teams: Argon and the Fairwind Program are the story to follow. If your organization works with Google on security, ask about eligibility.
Bottom Line
Gemini 4 Argon gives Google a new flagship, but for now it’s a limited release, and its benchmark picture is more mixed than the headlines suggest. The changes most people will feel this month are smaller: a cleaner Gemini app, new Live models, a better home assistant, and a firm date for the end of Gems.
I’ll update this article when Argon opens up more widely, when the redesign reaches my account, or when independent tests come in.
